In today’s fast-paced world, people are immensely busy with workloads, long commute hours and family responsibilities. Taking some time out to look after one’s health in this busy schedule is one of the most challenging tasks at present. Due to this, major things in life are overlooked – mostly sleeping, eating or leisure time and quality. But what if we can achieve a balance between personal and professional life very easily? Amazing right! The 8+8+8 rule is one such concept that can easily meet the demanding work schedules alongside personal responsibilities.

First, let us understand the meaning of the 8+8+8 rule. It generally means allocating 8 hours for work, 8 hours for sleep, and 8 hours for personal interests. In this way, achieving work-life balance becomes easy. However, dividing the 24 hours of a day restrictively in these compartments and maintaining the same rhythm every day is challenging.

So, here we have discussed the key ways to follow the rule in a flexible manner and prioritise things accordingly that will help us achieve a happier, healthier life.

Let us first discuss the challenges of implementing the 8+8+8 Rule.

The straightforward approach of the 8+8+8 Rule becomes quite difficult to manage. So, one’s 24 hours should be balanced in a way that one can pay attention to many other essential aspects of life. Gurleen Baruah, an organisational psychologist, opened up about the same matter as reported by The Indian Express. He said, “The 8+8+8 rule is meant to help people achieve balance by giving attention to all essential aspects. While it sounds straightforward, it’s not always easy to follow, especially in professions with irregular hours or demanding schedules, like healthcare, hospitality, or freelancing.”

So, how do we adapt the 8+8+8 rule instead of sticking to the rigid eight-hour blocks? The psychologist explains how to compensate for the sleep and family time hours from the work block. It will be achieved by taking short breaks amidst work throughout the day. Additionally, you need to schedule your activities accordingly. For instance, the majority of the personal work can be done later and should be scheduled for the weekends and emergencies first-hand.

The 8+8+8 rule has a great impact on mental and physical well-being. We are well aware that sleep and proper rest are the key factors in recharging one’s brain, improving focus and boosting the energy of the body. However, eight long hours of sleep timing is often overlooked due to other responsibilities. So, in this situation, it is important to take naps when time allows. Additionally, one should engage in many mind-relaxing activities like reading for 15 minutes, yoga, having tea with family, or breathing exercises. “Proper rest, especially consistent sleep, allows the brain to recharge, improves focus, and boosts energy. Physically, it helps the body repair itself, strengthens the immune system, and reduces the risk of burnout. Without enough rest, even small tasks can feel overwhelming, affecting both productivity and mood,” concluded Baruah.

It is clear from the fact that compartmentalising the day into three parts and following a comfortable pattern that allows an equal amount of leisure with work and sleep is extremely essential for good health.
